Great advice from Model Burn Book and its free
Coco was speaking at Modellounge, I totally identified and *fist pumped* the air when I later read her quote from that morning’s speech "…In the beginning I thought maybe I shouldn’t do that or say that or take that job because it’s not high fashion enough...but when high fashion is done with you, guess what? You go back to your parents’ basement and no one ever hears from you again.”
That, my friends, is exactly how I feel about modeling. I am vocal about it. I meet 16 year old models daily. I meet girls who are going to Tokyo who want advice about their modeling careers. All I ever want to say to them is, make that money like it ain’t EVER coming back…and SAVE it like it ain’t ever coming back. It doesn’t matter if u have a high profile runway exclusive, blah blah blah. There’s a high change no one will know who the fuck you even are next season.
I meet commercial girls every damn day who wish they could be more editorial. They want to stomp dem fucking runways. They want those campaigns. They want bloggers to talk about them. They’re hungry for a TFS profile. I identify. We all want that. But what those girls don’t realize is, EVERY RUNWAY MODEL WANTS TO BE A COMMERCIAL MODEL. For every blonde, slightly tanned, slightly freckled “healthy” girl next door model with a nice rack and a bum…there is a 5’11” skinny-as-fuck brunette who’s been made fun of all her life by girls, and never pulled by boys—who hates her.
This brunette will probably go on to sweep the runway season in Paris and Milan. Gay men who Tweet will deem her “EVERTHING.” But then what? You could be gone before Cruise Week, gorl. What you need to do for yourself, is sometimes not what you’re advised to do. Go to Asia. Do that commercial job. Pay your fucking way thru college. MAKE A SAVINGS ACCOUNT. Fuck, if u can, book commercial jobs thru your entire 20s…go to school have a family…have a career…put your babies thru college. You can do that with fashion. Its not over for you if you don’t book shows this fashion week. Don’t forget that my lil ladies. There is money to be had here. There are careers to be had…if you break that mold. There are a million 17 year olds in NYC for fashion week, so ask yourself, are you just one of them? Be different. Show-the-fuck-off. Your personality makes this week happen. Introduce yourself. Come say ‘hi’…and don’t forget, even if you don’t book shows…even if u don’t book walking presentations…you might still make a shit ton of money and be a successful model.
I know, it’s fucking crazy.
Potential is what they tell you you possess just so you never stop working for them.
